AI in NDT: define the inspection task before the model
AI can support evaluation. Dependable use requires suitable data, independent assessment and clear technical responsibility.

Describe the intended use precisely
Will the system highlight indications, sort datasets or support evaluation? These are different tasks. Define the intended use and operating conditions first. A convincing demonstration on selected data does not establish performance in later production use.
Ensure data quality and independent assessment
Training data must suit the intended use and be described traceably. Data used for final assessment should be considered separately from development. Careless splitting of similar images from the same component can create an overly favourable picture. Document origin, labelling and known limitations.
Control changes and technical decisions
New variants, changed sensors or different acquisition conditions can affect performance. Plan monitoring and reassessment of changes. Define who evaluates results and how uncertain cases are handled. An AI result should not be interpreted independently of the qualified inspection process.
Practical checklist
- Define intended use and limitations
- Document data origin and labelling
- Provide independent assessment
- Control changes, uncertainty and responsibility
Planning example
Illustrative planning example, not a customer reference.
Planning example: A model was developed using images of one component family. Before applying it to a new geometry, assess whether its data basis and demonstrated performance are suitable for that use.
Key takeaway
A sound project starts by connecting a clear intended use with suitable data, independent assessment and technically controlled decisions.

These articles provide technical orientation. The specific inspection task and applicable requirements must be assessed for each project.
