Distinguishing qualification, familiarisation and responsibility
A personnel certificate is important evidence of competence. A specific inspection process also needs clear operational arrangements.

The general role of ISO 9712
ISO 9712 and its applicable national adoptions address qualification and certification of NDT personnel. The evidence required must be assessed for the method, sector and task. Personnel certification is neither company accreditation nor blanket evidence of competence for every inspection activity.
A specific system needs familiarisation
Operator interfaces, component handling, programs and escalation routes differ between systems. System-specific familiarisation helps make these relationships understandable. It should be clear which activities may be performed independently and when a technically responsible person must be involved.
Make responsibilities visible in daily work
Define roles for inspection, technical evaluation, changes and document approval. Cover and shift handover deserve the same attention as normal operation. Keeping required evidence current and checking its scope belong to operational organisation. Applicable requirements remain project- and sector-specific.
Practical checklist
- Determine task-appropriate qualification evidence
- Check scope and validity
- Document system-specific familiarisation
- Define evaluation, change and escalation roles
Planning example
Illustrative planning example, not a customer reference.
Planning example: A qualified inspector takes over a different automated system. In addition to the existing competence evidence, organise familiarisation with that system's programs, operation and clarification cases.
Key takeaway
Appropriate qualification, documented familiarisation and clear responsibilities jointly support a traceable inspection process.
